Review: “Cat Planet Cuties”

"Cat Planet Cuties" is owned by Funimation EntertainmentAnime fans seem to be taking a lot of crap from people who don’t understand it at all. While there is a lot of quality anime out there, it is buried by the mass amount of plot less shonen, confusing harams, and more shows that offer more fan service any “Miss I’m Too Insecure About my Personality, so I Want to Be Judge By My Looks” parents.

When an anime veteran sees something like “Cat Planet Cuties” they will immediately lump it into a stereotypical fan service type anime. Simply on that face value, some people will immediately buy it while others will blow it off. Both parties, though, will be surprised that it’s not exactly what they thought it would be.

The story revolves around a young boy named Kio (voiced by Aaron Dismuke), who discovers a strange girl by the name of Eris (Tia Ballard) at one of his family gatherings. It is discovered that Eris is a genuine alien, from the planet known as Catia. While their people look similar to humans, the obvious difference is that Catians have real cat ears and tails, not to mention that Eris have breasts that seem disproportional to her body.

The first two episodes of Cat Planet Cuties have very heavy on fan service, making sure to hook in that kind of audience, which is almost a standard for most anime. It will easy weed out those who are interested and those who will choose to blow it off.

Blowing off the show so early may not be such a wise idea though. After the initial “hooking” episodes, fan service isn’t as presence as it was and focusses on the sci-fi elements involved. “Cat Planet Cuties” is a more episodic kind of show than linear, although some elements do transfer from show to show.

The story doesn’t really need a central plot though. It’s a standard “fish out of water” tale, so the show focusses on the Catians discovering the strange things of Earth. Almost everything is played for laughs, which is sometimes hit-or-miss. Many dramatic elements don’t feel paced too well, but it does have a good heart to it. The love harem between Kio and the girls does drive many of the episodes, and is resolved at the end with information that could have solved all of it within the first arc.

A lot of money went into the show. Deep details of space ships and gun battles are showcased in almost every episode. It is also good to see that every girl has their own distinct look, instead of all of them looking similar.

The show’s biggest strength comes from Kio’s two friends, Aoi (Monica Rial) and Manami (Brittney Karbowski). While it is obvious that the two of them have crushes on Kio (as it seems to be the standard for all anime these days), they don’t really seem to spend a lot of time around them. They’re usually off doing their own thing. In this way, they become more fleshed out, and the chemistry between the two of them works really well.

It’s the opposite for the leads though. Eris and Kio are just standard archetypes of the characters they portray. Kio is the nerdy schoolboy who means well and Eris is the innocent, busty alien girl who doesn’t know any better. It’s something that is done to death in anime (with and without the alien part) and really brings down the quality. The two of them, while have great chemistry, are just boring, which is devastating if you’re the lead characters.

The voice acting is also very well done; but, this is Funimation, of course it’s going to be well done. Casting for each of the characters seems to fit perfectly, from Ballard’s amazing feeling of innocence for Eris to Rial’s strong, yet feminine vibe from Aoi. Unfortunately, the script is a bit weak, but that’s more to blame on the kind of material that they are trying to adapt.

“Cat Planet Cuties” is a fun show, and while it can take itself too seriously at points, it still manages some way to keep you interested. Some people will be turned away by the fact that this is a “fan service” show, and new comers to anime may just be put off completely, but those who decide to give it a chance will be pleasantly surprised. The show is only twelve episodes long, as well as containing an OVA (filled with excessive fan service). “Cat Planet Cuties” is good to watch with a Funimation Elite membership, or borrowing it from a friend to see what it is, but not really one of those shows that need to be purchased right away.

Lazy Friday Post

It’s been a few days since I launched “Short Stories of an Untreated Mind”. I hope that a lot of people do get around to reading it and that it is picked up by the other e-book distributors. If only a few people by the book, but they really do enjoy it, then that makes me really happy. “Waxing Darkness” and this book are obviously two very different kinds of writing, so I don’t really expect the same things to happen the first time around.

Even now, I’m planning out my newest story. I’m still giving myself a break from the world I centered around fantasy and more for a futuristic story. It’s still in the planning stages, and I hope to start getting into the meet of it real soon. The idea came to me when I was simply jolting down ideas for different kinds of stories. It was the one that popped out at me the most, saying “Hey; this seems like a really good idea.”

I don’t want to go too far into detail about the story that is to come, simply because I’m not quite sure what it’s going to turn out to be. I have the idea, but sometimes it can turn out to be something that is completely different. What I will say is that my idea was inspired by one of my favorite musicals.

I have about a month of school left, and finals are going to pop up on me before I know it. Registering for class also seems like it’s going to be a pain, but I have a few classes in mind that’ll hopefully be up my ally. Finals probably won’t eat me up as much as I think it would, but I don’t want to be too overconfident. At least, for the time I have off (I know I’m going to have to find some summer courses), I can devote it to seeing films, catching up on my reading, and getting a big chunk of my writing done.

Headaches

I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to keep something like this updated. I could fill this thing with movie reviews, book reviews, or just update it about how my writing is going. Not much happens around me though. I guess that’s what happens with someone like me. I’ll try to write more at this place. I started it for one reason or another.

Not much has happened for me though. I read through the “Hunger Games” trilogy, which was alright. Were they okay books? Yes. Are they worth the hype? No. Do I regret reading them? No; like I said, they’re okay books. I have my reservations with them, but I need to find a better way to sort out those issues.

I happy to know that I’m going to put up another book up for publishing at Smashwords. The title is “Short Stories of an Untreated Mind”. It’s a project that I’ve been working on for the past month or so, and it’s been really fun every step of the way. Hopefully, I can have it out by April 30th, or at least that’s the date I’m planning to have it out. The stories are done, and most of the editing and revisions are done. The link for that facebook page can be found here.

I’m also working on another novel as we speak. It’s not in the series with “Waxing Darkness”, my fantasy series. I’ll work on the second book to that one some time in the fall. This new story is more science fiction than anything else. It’ll also be a stand alone story. That’s all I’m willing to say for now.

Well, hopefully I can update this thing more and more. School is probably the one thing that keeps me busy most of my time.

The Day I Finished My Novel

I’m not sure how much emotion I’m going to put into this blog entry. Today is the day that I officially launch “Waxing Darkness” on Smashwords.com. I had been working on it like crazy for the past few months; the fact that I have finally finished it is kind of crazy. Probably the most surprising thing I’ve encountered is the feedback from people. Various others are telling me that my writing is good and that the story is very inviting. To them, I would like to offer my most humble thanks.

I' am going to be promoting Waxing Darkness for the next few days or weeks, doing various things to invite other people in. With Smashwords, they have added audio books to their site, which is being promoted by Podiobooks.com. I think I may do a read through of my novel, just to add another medium. The book is already free in the first place, and I had always been interested in doing some kind of audio book. My heart always goes out to the arts.

I guess that’s one big reason why I made the book free. I don’t really care about money, and I really want to share my art right now. Maybe later on, with different stories, I’ll charge a dollar or so, but for right now, this is a story that should be shared with others. There’s nothing more that I really want to say that already hasn’t been said in the stories Afterword. If you want to know what that says, then read my novel.

Waxing Darkness is available for free at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/108008

Audio book coming soon?

I sometimes hate computers…

I understand that I haven’t updated this blog in a while. It is mainly due to the fact that my computer crashed at the beginning of December. I sent it in to get repaired, meaning that I was unable to do a lot of the things I was planning to do (such as editing Within Darkness and starting on a new story). I got my computer back a few days ago and have been trying to get myself into some kind of routine with my writing and editing.

I am still on winter break, which is both a blessing and an annoyance. For one thing, I get incredibly bored real easily, and school at least fills in a lot of the time where I’m bored. However, now I can use that time to do all the writing that I want to do, as well as continue to try out some voice acting stuff.

Not really sure if I should say anything else. I’ll update this thing whenever I am able to. My chest has still been hurting, but that’s something I can’t ignore.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Currently, I am working on my final speech for my Speech class, the only class I think I’m going to pass this semester. It’s a simple speech, why Harry Potter is superior to Twilight, but I’m having fun thinking of some fun stuff to say. I should have posted this much earlier too, but I also finished my NaNoWriMo novel. The first draft is a little bit over 50K, but I am proud of myself that I finished it. If you want to check out the rough draft (don’t worry, it’s free), I’ll provide a link at the end of this post.

After working on Waxing Darkness, for over a month, it feels weird not writing for long periods of time. I know I’m going to continue writing, even when I’m editing the book to put up for sale. NaNoWriMo has revitalized my desire to tell stories, let them be good or bad. As long as they make it past 50K, I’ll be happy. It’s also showed me that I’m not a completely terrible writer; I’m at least better than Stephenie Meyer.

For the past few days though, it has been unbearable to even breath. It doesn’t feel like the flu, although that’s what they’re going to call it. I keep feeling like I’m going to collapse in the middle of one of my classes one day and wake up in a hospital bed. Nothing just seems to feel right anymore.

For research for my speech, I looked back through the Twilight books. Within one of them is a poem by Robert Frost, Fire and Ice. It got me thinking back to a poem that I memorized back in middle school, the poem from The Outsiders. Thankfully, Google exists, and I found the poem. I read through it and felt blown away; a poem I didn’t really understand in the past now spoke so clearly to me. I hope to add his poem to one of my stories one day, one that can do it great justice.

Word Vomit (because I’m SICK, that’s why!)

So, yeah, I’ve been sick for the last two days. Worst of all, I’ve probably had about three hours sleep between both nights together. I probably should have used my time more efficiently; I’d probably be further in my word count if I used my time right. I’m at the beginning of 33K and hope to be in the mid 40K by Sunday. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe not. What I do know is that I’m going to sleep soon.

For a little while, I’ve been thinking about writing review. Review of what you may or may not be asking? I’m talking about the whole sha-bang-a-bang! Books, movies, manga, anime, tv shows and other crap that I really like. I’ll probably get around to that once I finish writing this freaking book.

I hate how I get obsessed over the strangest of things. This morning, when I couldn’t sleep, I looked through some of the 20/20 recordings I have. One of them involved a woman named Diane Downs. To simplify the story (go look it up yourself you maggots!), she killed one of her kids and nearly killed the other two over some booty-call, and she had another baby while beginning her prison sentence. After watching the episode, I looked her up like crazy, and found a movie titled Small Sacrifices (staring Farah Fawcett; looking it up on YouTube, it’s really good). The scene in the court room where they played Hungry Like a Wolf ruined the entire song for me. If I ever hear that song at some kind of party, you can guarantee that I’m going to be crying my eyes out like a little girl.

So, yeah, I have the flu now. It’s not all that fun, but there’s nothing I can do about besides complain and stay in bed. Cheers to those of you who are lucky enough to not get sick during this time. And to all of you who have 3DS’s at this point, I hate every single one of you. My opinion will change as soon as I get a 3DS of my own.
